Portland United suffered a narrow 3–2 defeat away to Hamble Club on Tuesday evening in an entertaining encounter at the Hamble Community Facility, with the hosts doing just enough to withstand a spirited late rally from the Blues.

The home side started brightly and quickly imposed themselves on proceedings. An early warning came inside the opening minute when Casey fired over from distance, before B. Johnson tried his luck from range shortly after.

Hamble’s early pressure paid off on 16 minutes. A pinpoint delivery from Douglas found Casey, who rose well to plant a firm header beyond the Portland goalkeeper and give the hosts a deserved lead.

The Blues struggled to gain a foothold, and Hamble nearly doubled their advantage on 27 minutes when B. Johnson unleashed a powerful effort that crashed back off the upright. Just minutes later, the same player made amends, meeting another delivery from Douglas to head home and make it 2–0.

Hamble remained in control for the remainder of the half, moving the ball confidently and limiting Portland’s attacking opportunities, and they went into the break with a two-goal cushion at 2–0.

Portland emerged for the second half with renewed intent, making changes early on to try and shift the momentum. The Blues began to see more of the ball, but Hamble still carried a threat, with Taylor forcing a smart save from distance.

The visitors got themselves back into the contest on 68 minutes when Coombs fired home a low left-footed drive to reduce the deficit and spark belief.

However, that momentum was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Hamble responded as Lovell restored the two-goal advantage on 70 minutes, making it 3–1 and putting the hosts back in control.

To their credit, Portland refused to fold. As the game moved into its closing stages, Remus Nixon produced a moment of quality on 85 minutes, delicately lobbing the goalkeeper to bring the score back to 3–2 and set up a tense finish.

With momentum firmly on their side, Portland threw everything forward in the closing minutes, piling on the pressure as Hamble were forced deeper and deeper. Despite the late onslaught, the hosts held firm through stoppage time to secure all three points.

It was a game of two halves in many ways. Hamble’s clinical first-half display ultimately proved decisive, but Portland’s character and persistence in the second period will give them encouragement, even if they left empty-handed on the night.
