Portland United v Wincanton Town. Saturday 4th April (3:00pm)
Portland United return to action this Saturday afternoon as they welcome Wincanton Town to the Camp & Satherley Stadium, with a 3:00pm kick off.
The Blues will be looking to build on what has already been a positive season, and they’ll take confidence from the reverse fixture back on Tuesday 5th August. Having opened their campaign in the FA Cup the previous Saturday, that encounter with Wincanton Town represented Portland’s first league fixture of the season and their second game overall, and Portland produced a strong away performance to run out convincing 4–1 winners.
Wincanton Town arrive on the Island with mixed form over their recent run of fixtures. Their most recent outing ended in a heavy 7–0 defeat away at Portishead Town in the Somerset FA County Cup, a result they will no doubt be keen to put behind them quickly. In the league, however, their form has shown more resilience. A 2–2 draw at Cowes Sports and an impressive 3–0 victory away to Baffins Milton Rovers highlight their ability to compete, although a narrow 2–1 defeat at Laverstock & Ford shows there has been some inconsistency.
For Portland, this presents an opportunity, but not one to take lightly. Wincanton have shown they can be dangerous on their day, particularly going forward, and will be motivated to respond after Tuesday night’s disappointment.
With home advantage and the memory of that opening day league win, Portland will be expected to take the initiative, but they will need to be sharp and disciplined to secure all three points.
All the signs point towards an entertaining contest on Saturday, as Portland look to continue their push, and Wincanton aim to get back on track.
