Match Report: Dave Ring
Portland United Under 18s had to settle for a point as they were held to a 1–1 draw by Poole Town Wessex Colts Under 18s at Redlands Sports Centre, Weymouth, on the newly laid 3G pitch.
In a competitive and well contested encounter, both sides adapted quickly to the slick surface, moving the ball well and showing plenty of energy throughout. Poole Town struck first to gain the advantage, capitalising on a moment of pressure to edge ahead and give Portland work to do.
To their credit, Portland responded positively and grew into the game, creating chances and asking questions of the Poole defence. Their persistence was rewarded in the second half when they were awarded a penalty. Moles stepped up and showed real composure from the spot, calmly converting to bring Portland level.
The remainder of the match saw chances at both ends, with neither side able to find a decisive winner despite the high tempo and commitment on display. In the end, a draw was a fair reflection of a match that was evenly balanced from start to finish.
Portland will take encouragement from the performance and attitude, particularly their response after going behind, as they continue to build momentum on an impressive new playing surface.
