Portland United Reserves were left to reflect on a frustrating afternoon at Petersham Lane as three first-half goals put Holt United in control, before the hosts eventually ran out 4–0 winners.

The Reserves made the trip to fourth-placed Holt looking to pick up a positive result, but found themselves chasing the game after a difficult opening 45 minutes.

Holt started brightly and took the lead through Ally Williams, before Ollie Wilson doubled the advantage as the home side made their early pressure count. Portland continued to battle and looked to settle into the game, but a third goal from Ben Hands just before the interval left the visitors facing a sizeable deficit at half-time.

Whatever was said in the Portland dressing room at the break clearly had an effect.

The Reserves emerged with renewed purpose and produced a much more encouraging second-half display. Portland competed better, moved the ball with greater confidence and enjoyed significantly more possession, putting Holt under pressure for extended periods.

The visitors were unable to find the goal that would have given them a route back into the contest, however, and Holt eventually made the most of an opportunity at the other end when George Ashby added a fourth.

The final score was perhaps a little harsh on a Portland side who showed considerably more after the break and, importantly, continued to compete right through to the final whistle.

There is certainly plenty for the Reserves to take from the second half, despite another difficult result. With a young and developing squad still finding its feet in the Dorset Premier League, consistency remains the key, and Portland will be looking to turn the encouraging elements of their performance into points in the weeks ahead.

Holt remain fourth following the victory, while Portland sit 15th and will now turn their attention to the next opportunity to get their season moving in the right direction.
