Portland United 1-2 Falmouth Town

Portland United suffered late heartbreak at the Camp & Satherley Stadium on Tuesday evening as Falmouth Town snatched a 2–1 victory with an unfortunate own goal deep into stoppage time.
In front of 206 supporters, the Blues produced a committed and entertaining display against a strong Falmouth side, but after holding the visitors at bay for more than 80 minutes, Portland were left empty handed by a cruel late twist.
The opening stages were played at a frantic pace, with both sides showing plenty of attacking intent. Falmouth missed a huge opportunity after just four minutes when a quick break left their forward one on one, but the effort flashed wide of the far post.
Portland responded positively and almost opened the scoring in the tenth minute. Jenkins produced a superb piece of individual play, twisting and turning his way past two defenders before delivering an inch perfect ball into the box. Borthwick was waiting with a free header but could not find the target.
The visitors continued to threaten, and Smalley was called into action in the 12th minute, producing a superb point blank save to keep the scores level during an end-to-end opening.
Nixon then tried his luck from distance, battling his way past his man before firing narrowly wide, while Portland also began to enjoy longer spells of possession.
One of the Blues’ best moves of the first half came in the 42nd minute. Patient passing saw Portland work their way up the pitch before Jenkins delivered towards the near post. Nixon arrived at the right moment but was unable to get the final touch needed to turn the ball home.
Woolford received treatment shortly afterwards, but was able to continue, and the two sides went into the interval goalless.
Portland began the second half with purpose and immediately looked to put pressure on the visitors. Nixon was brought down on the edge of the box after a quick break led by Jenkins, earning Falmouth a yellow card, but Nixon headed just over from the resulting free kick.
Smalley was again called upon in the 57th minute, making another excellent stop from a Falmouth corner as the visitors began to threaten more regularly.
Portland made their first change on 61 minutes, with Bent replacing Borthwick, before Camp replaced Jenkins eight minutes later. Brook then entered the action for Woolford in the 72nd minute, with Cleaver introduced for Scott four minutes later as the Blues continued searching for the breakthrough.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Portland was pushing hard for the opening goal, but Falmouth finally broke the deadlock in the 81st minute, leaving Portland with just nine minutes of normal time to find a response, and respond they did.
In the 86th minute, Jacob Coombs produced a superb diving header to level the scores at 1–1, sending the Camp & Satherley Stadium into celebration and giving the Blues renewed hope of snatching something from the game.
But heartbreakingly, that hope lasted barely five minutes. In the first minute of added time, an unfortunate own goal handed Falmouth the lead once again, leaving Portland stunned after fighting their way back into the contest.
The Blues had four minutes of added time to find another equaliser, but this time there was to be no way back, as Falmouth held on for a 2–1 victory.
It was a bitter way for the Blues to lose, particularly after such a competitive performance and with the side having remained unbeaten at home for long spells of the contest. The result represents only Portland’s second league defeat of the season, but the manner of the loss will undoubtedly make this one particularly difficult to take.
For all the disappointment, there was plenty for the Blues to take from a performance in which they matched a strong Falmouth side for long periods and never stopped battling. On another night, the chances and pressure could easily have produced a different result.
