Harley Brook wrote his name into Portland United folklore with a dramatic stoppage-time winner, capping a sensational second-half turnaround as Kyle Critchell’s Blues produced a remarkable 2–1 away victory against Bideford AFC.

Making the trip to Devon determined to put the disappointment of Tuesday night’s late defeat to Falmouth Town firmly behind them, Portland knew they would have to dig deep against a Bideford side looking to make home advantage count. And for much of the opening 45 minutes, it was the hosts who controlled the contest.

Portland struggled to find their rhythm in the early stages as Bideford pressed with purpose, with Jordan Ewing and Finn King-Smith both threatening as the hosts looked to exploit gaps in the Blues defence.

The pressure eventually told in the 26th minute. Farren Simons was brought down inside the Portland penalty area, giving the referee little option but to point to the spot. Ewing stepped up and kept his composure, sending Callum Smalley the wrong way from 12 yards to put Bideford in front.

Portland was suddenly facing another uphill battle, trailing once again after conceding a crucial goal. There was little between the sides in terms of effort, but the Blues went into the interval knowing they needed something different if they were going to turn the game around.

Manager Kyle Critchell wasted no time in making his move. Harley Brook was introduced for Tom Peach at half-time, and the change immediately injected fresh energy into the Portland attack.

The transformation was striking. Portland emerged for the second half with a completely different intensity, taking the game to Bideford and forcing the hosts deeper and deeper towards their own penalty area. The Blues began to dominate possession and territory, with wave after wave of pressure finally producing the breakthrough just nine minutes after the restart.

A pinpoint free-kick was delivered into the danger area and Jacob Coombs rose highest to meet it. His header crashed against the crossbar before bouncing down and over the line, leaving no doubt that Portland had levelled.

It was Coombs’ fifth goal of an already prolific campaign and, more importantly, it gave the Blues the platform they needed to go in search of all three points.

Suddenly, Portland was in the ascendancy. Bideford’s defence was being stretched to its limits as the visitors continued to press, and further changes from the Portland bench saw Josh Williams introduced as Critchell looked to maintain the momentum and find the decisive second goal.

Brook was proving particularly troublesome. The substitute was beginning to find pockets of space and, on one occasion, went around the Bideford goalkeeper only to be denied by a heroic last-ditch challenge that somehow kept the scores level.

There were further opportunities for the Blues, with Coombs and Remus Nixon both going agonisingly close as Portland continued to turn the screw.

The longer the game went on, however, the greater the tension became.

Bideford were hanging on, Portland was pushing for the winner, and with the clock ticking towards the final whistle it looked increasingly likely that the hosts might somehow survive the onslaught and escape with a point.

But Portland refused to settle. Their persistence, character and belief were finally rewarded in the third minute of stoppage time.

And it was the man who had arrived from the bench to change the game who delivered the decisive blow.

Harley Brook picked up the ball and drove towards the Bideford goal before drilling a low shot beyond Luke Gwillam and into the net at the near post.

Cue pandemonium. Portland players raced to celebrate with their match-winner, while the travelling supporters were left celebrating a finish that had looked increasingly unlikely just moments earlier.

For Brook, it was a moment he will never forget, his first goal in Portland colours arriving at precisely the right time and securing a dramatic victory after a magnificent second-half performance.

From a half-time deficit to a heart-stopping finale, the Blues had shown immense character to turn the game on its head. After the disappointment of the late Falmouth defeat, Portland had responded in the best possible fashion, refusing to let another difficult situation slip away.

The three points lift Portland up to 11th in the Southern League Division One South table, with 11 points from their opening seven matches.
