Portland United Reserves 1–3 Swanage Town & Herston
Dorset Premier League
Saturday 17th October 2026 – 3:00pm
Camp & Satherley Stadium
Portland United Reserves welcomed second-placed Swanage FC to the Camp & Satherley Stadium on Saturday, looking to put in a strong performance against one of the league’s leading sides.
Portland started brightly and immediately put Swanage on the back foot with a series of early attacks. Their positive start was rewarded after 20 minutes when a well-weighted pass split the Swanage defence, allowing Connor Bent to race through and calmly slot the ball past the goalkeeper to give Portland a deserved 1–0 lead.
Just two minutes later, Portland came close to doubling their advantage. A wonderful cross from Jo Waring found Bent, whose header narrowly missed the target by a whisker.
As the half progressed, Swanage began to find their feet and created a number of chances of their own, although they were unable to find an equaliser. Portland continued to threaten, and in the 36th minute, in-form striker Mike Powell came agonisingly close to extending the home side’s lead, his effort grazing the wrong side of the post.
Portland went into the break deservedly leading 1–0 after an impressive first-half display.
Swanage came out of the blocks quickly after the restart, determined to get back into the game. Their pressure paid off in the 50th minute when a well-worked move resulted in an equalising goal, bringing the scores level at 1–1.
The following 30 minutes saw an evenly contested battle, with both sides working tirelessly in search of the goal that could swing the game in their favour. Portland continued to compete well against the second-placed visitors, but as the match entered its final stages, Swanage found another gear.
The visitors took the lead in the 80th minute before striking again five minutes later to put the game beyond Portland’s reach. The late double secured a 3–1 victory for Swanage and ensured they maintained their position in second place in the Dorset Premier League.
Despite the disappointing final scoreline, Portland can take encouragement from a strong first-half performance and a determined effort against one of the division’s top sides. Having led at half-time, the challenge now will be to build on those positive spells and maintain that level of performance for the full 90 minutes.
