Portland United U18s suffered a narrow 2–1 defeat away to Hamworthy United U18s on Sunday afternoon, despite a determined second-half effort from the young Blues in their Dorset U18 League Division One encounter.

The hosts took the lead in the first half and carried their 1–0 advantage into the interval, leaving Portland with work to do after the restart.

The young Blues responded positively, and their persistence paid off when Birch found the net, with Wareing providing the assist to bring Portland back into the contest and set up a tense finish.

However, Hamworthy struck again to restore their advantage, leaving Portland chasing another equaliser. The visitors continued to push, but the hosts held firm to secure all three points.

Although the result was disappointing, Portland can take encouragement from their response after falling behind. Birch’s goal gave the visitors hope, but ultimately the young Blues were unable to find a second as their hosts claimed victory.

Portland United U18s starting line-up: Bament, Wash, Moss, Rodgers, Porter, Fisher, Pearce, Gregg, Bobora-David, Roy, Wareing.
