Cobham Sports U18 4-1 Portland United U18
Dorset County FA Youth Cup
County Ground, Hamworthy. Thursday 16th April. (7:30pm)

Portland United U18s saw their impressive cup run come to an end with a 4–1 defeat against a strong Cobham Sports side in the Dorset Youth Cup Final at the County Ground.

The Blues started brightly and nearly made the perfect start inside the opening minutes, when an early chance was headed just wide. Cobham responded with a chance of their own on 10 minutes, firing over the bar.

The deadlock was broken on 24 minutes, as Cobham took the lead following a scrappy sequence, eventually forcing the ball home. Moments later, Cobham were reduced to 10 men after a red card on 31 minutes. Despite the setback, they continued to press and added further goals before the interval to take firm control, going into the break with a commanding 3–0 advantage.

Portland showed good character after the restart and continued to work hard despite the scoreline. Their efforts were rewarded on 75 minutes when Wareing struck from the edge of the area, finding the back of the net to pull one back for the Blues.

Any hopes of a comeback were short-lived as Cobham responded just minutes later with another goal to restore their cushion at 4–1. From there, they showed composure and game management to see out the closing stages, slowing the tempo and limiting Portland to few clear openings despite continued effort from the Blues. After a minimum of four additional minutes, the final whistle confirmed their victory.

Credit must go to Cobham Sports, who produced a strong and clinical performance to lift the trophy.

While defeat in the final will sting, it should not overshadow an excellent run to the showpiece occasion from Portland’s young side, who can take plenty of positives from reaching the final.
