Camp & Satherley Stadium
Velocity Wessex premier League Play-Off Final
Attendance 810

Portland United wrote themselves into the history books on a sun-soaked afternoon at the Camp & Satherley Stadium, overcoming Laverstock & Ford in a nerve-shredding play-off final that was ultimately decided by penalties after 120 goalless minutes.

With a crowd of 810 packed tightly around the ground, the stakes could not have been higher. Promotion to the Southern League, something never before achieved in the club’s history, was within touching distance. What followed was a contest full of tension, grit and heart, even if clear-cut chances were at a premium.

The opening exchanges set the tone. A cagey start saw both sides feeling their way into the match, with little to separate them in the first quarter. Portland gradually began to grow into the game, and the best chance of the first half fell their way on 29 minutes. Archie Woolford found himself in prime position, only to see his powerful effort crash back off the crossbar, a moment that had the home crowd on its feet and hands on heads in equal measure.

Despite that flashpoint, the sides went into the break locked at 0-0, knowing one moment could define their season.

The second half followed a similar pattern, tight, competitive and full of determination from both teams. Laverstock & Ford made changes in an attempt to swing momentum their way, while Portland responded in kind, Greg Borthwick and Hayden Scott introduced to inject fresh energy. Chances remained scarce, tension rising with every passing minute as neither side could find the breakthrough.

Full-time arrived with the deadlock unbroken, and the final moved into extra-time.

Even with fatigue setting in, both teams continued to battle. Josh Camp and Ben Morris were introduced as Portland looked for that decisive moment, but defences held firm. Every tackle, every clearance, every pass carried immense weight. Yet still, nothing could separate the sides.

And so it came down to penalties.

What followed was pure drama. Portland held their nerve superbly from the spot, converting five of their efforts with composure and confidence. Laverstock & Ford could only muster three in reply, and when the decisive penalty hit the net, the stadium erupted.

Players, staff and supporters poured onto the pitch in scenes of pure joy and disbelief.

This was more than just a win. It was the culmination of years of hard work, commitment and belief throughout the club. From the players on the pitch to those behind the scenes, this was a collective achievement that will live long in the memory.

Portland United are heading to the Southern League for the first time in their history.

No Words, indeed.
