Portland United Reserves welcomed Wareham Rangers to the Camp Satherley Stadium on Saturday, looking to put right the 3–0 defeat suffered against Wareham in the opening game of the season.

In-form striker Mike Powell stepped up confidently and made no mistake from the penalty spot, giving Portland a 1–0 lead.
The game then settled into an evenly contested period, with Wareham enjoying more possession and putting Portland under pressure. However, home goalkeeper Karl Wall produced several important saves to keep Portland in front.
Portland finished the first half strongly and came close to doubling their advantage in the 44th minute. A perfectly delivered corner from Joe Waring found captain Haydn Payne, whose powerful header struck the crossbar.
Half-time: Portland United Reserves 1–0 Wareham Rangers.
Wareham came out strongly after the break and almost found an equaliser just four minutes into the second half. A scramble inside the Portland six-yard box saw Karl Wall and the Portland defence desperately clear the ball off the goal line.
Wareham continued to apply pressure, but Portland defended resolutely to protect their narrow lead.
An injury to Tom Butcher saw Josh Tennant introduced in attack, while Ben Holloway made his debut in the Portland defence. The changes helped Portland regain momentum, with Tennant causing problems for the Wareham defence with several dangerous attacks.
In the 65th minute, Portland came close to extending their lead when Preston Hepburn produced a superb overhead kick, only for the Wareham goalkeeper to make an excellent save.
Portland continued to threaten, and in the 75th minute another attack involving Josh Tennant saw the ball side-footed towards goal, only for it to clip the post and bounce away.
Wareham refused to give up and continued to create opportunities. Their persistence eventually paid off in the 85th minute when they found the back of the net to level the scores.
Portland pushed for a late winner, but neither side could find the decisive goal, and the match finished 1–1.
It was a hard-fought contest between two sides who worked tirelessly throughout. Portland will take plenty of positives from the performance, particularly their defensive resilience and determination against a Wareham side that had enjoyed long periods of possession.
