Saturday 31st October 2026 – 3:00pm
Avenue Stadium
Portland United produced a quite magnificent performance to claim a memorable 3–2 victory over local rivals Dorchester Town at the Avenue Stadium, securing a historic three points in a thrilling Dorset derby that had everything.
In front of a crowd of 787 at the home of the Magpies, the Blues showed tremendous character, quality and determination to overcome their hosts in an entertaining encounter, with three superbly taken goals providing the platform for a victory that will live long in the memory.
Portland made a lively start and almost took the lead inside the opening six minutes when Harley Brook delivered a dangerous ball across the face of goal. Connor Bent got on the end of it but was unable to bring the ball under control.
The visitors continued to look threatening and were rewarded in the 12th minute with a superb opening goal. Archie Woolford led the press brilliantly, dispossessing a Dorchester defender on the edge of the penalty area. With plenty still to do, Woolford drove infield before calmly slotting the ball into the far corner to give Portland a deserved 1–0 advantage.
However, the hosts responded almost immediately and drew level just three minutes later. Ethan Taylor found the net from close range in the 15th minute to bring Dorchester back into the contest at 1–1.
Portland refused to be unsettled and continued to take the game to their opponents. Bent was almost on the scoresheet in the 14th minute, his powerful effort from distance forcing an excellent save from the Dorchester goalkeeper.
Woolford was again at the heart of the action in the 23rd minute, beating his marker before unleashing a fierce strike that required another fine save from the home goalkeeper.
The pressure continued, with Jacob Coombs seeing an effort on the turn comfortably dealt with before Jake Streams almost connected with a dangerous Woolford set-piece delivery in the 29th minute.
Despite creating several promising opportunities, neither side could find another breakthrough before the interval, with the teams going in level at 1–1 after an impressive first-half display from the Blues.
The second half began with both sides knowing that the next goal could prove crucial, and Portland continued where they had left off.
Williams was shown a yellow card in the 54th minute, but the visitors remained positive and nearly regained the lead three minutes later. Woolford once again demonstrated his quality, cutting inside before unleashing a terrific effort towards the top corner, only for the Dorchester goalkeeper to produce yet another outstanding save.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 65th minute, and it was a moment of real quality from the visitors. Woolford initially saw his effort saved but reacted superbly to lift the ball back across goal, where Patrick Jenkins was perfectly positioned to head home and restore Portland’s advantage at 2–1.
The celebrations among the travelling Blues supporters were still in full swing when Portland struck again just eleven minutes later.
This time it was Harley Brook who provided the finishing touch, smashing the ball home in the 76th minute to send the Portland contingent into further celebration and give the visitors a commanding 3–1 lead.
With the game entering its final stages, Dorchester attempted to find a way back, but Portland showed tremendous resilience and commitment to protect their advantage. Callum Corbridge produced a particularly important intervention in the 81st minute, putting his body on the line to deny the hosts and preserve the two-goal cushion.
Portland made further changes as the clock ticked down, with Jack Delves, Tom Peach, Josh Camp and Hayden Scott all introduced as the Blues looked to see out the contest.
Dorchester, however, refused to give up and made things uncomfortable in the closing moments. Ethan Taylor grabbed his second goal of the afternoon in the first minute of added time, reducing the deficit to 3–2 and setting up a nervy finish.
There was still work to do, but Portland held their nerve through the remaining minutes to secure a remarkable victory and claim all three points.
It was a performance built on attacking quality, hard work and an enormous amount of determination. Woolford was instrumental throughout, opening the scoring and playing a key role in setting up Jenkins’ goal, while Jenkins and Brook both provided excellent finishes to complete a memorable afternoon for the Blues.
To win a local derby away from home, in front of a crowd of 787, and to do so with such quality and character was a tremendous achievement for Portland United.
A famous afternoon at the Avenue Stadium, three goals, three points and a derby victory that will be savoured by everyone connected with the Blues. Simply astonishing!
