Dorchester Sports 2–1 Portland United Reserves
Dorset Premier League – Saturday 17th January – Avenue Stadium
Portland United Reserves suffered a narrow 2–1 defeat at the Avenue Stadium, going down to Dorchester Sports in a hard-fought encounter that had its share of drama and fine margins.
The Blues fielded a strong starting XI, led by captain Haydn Payne, though they were without Ash Smith, who was named on the team sheet but had to leave for work. The Reserves also rotated their bench, with Hathway, Morano, and Ross-Mackenzie all coming on during the contest.
From the outset, Portland pressed and looked sharp on the break, but Dorchester’s home side capitalised on their opportunities. The hosts struck first, and though Portland responded with intensity, they found themselves chasing the game.
The Blues pulled a goal back, giving a glimpse of hope and keeping the match finely poised, but Dorchester held firm. Substitutions brought fresh energy, Hathway, Morano, and Ross-Mackenzie made their impact felt, yet Portland couldn’t find the equaliser, leaving the Reserves to rue missed chances.
Despite the loss, the team showed resilience and discipline, with standout performances from Andy Ennals, Josh Hanger, and Harvey Davies, and the captain, Haydn Payne, marshalled the side admirably throughout.
Portland now regroup and look ahead to their next fixture, aiming to bounce back and build on the positives from a tightly contested game.
Portland United Reserves: Ennals, Payne (C), Hanger, Taylor, Grace, Davies, Waring, Norman, Walsh, Powell, Da Costa
Subs used: Hathway on for Waring, Morano on for Davies, Ross-Mackenzie on for Walsh
