Match Report: Dave Ring

Portland United Under 18s were edged out in a five-goal encounter away to Lilliput, despite a strong performance that deserved more from the game.

The hosts struck early to take the lead, putting Portland on the back foot from the outset. However, the visitors responded well and grew into the contest, showing composure and intent in possession. Their efforts were rewarded in the 19th minute when Cleeton found the net to bring the sides level, finishing confidently after good work from Hepburn.

At 1-1 heading into the break, Portland looked well in the contest and carried that momentum into the second half. Cleeton struck again in the 54th minute, calmly converting to put Portland 2-1 ahead, this time assisted by Roy.

With the advantage, Portland looked in control for spells, but the game turned in the latter stages. Lilliput equalised on 59 minutes before completing the turnaround with a third goal on 75 minutes, leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb.

A series of substitutions followed as Portland looked to inject fresh energy and find a late response, but despite their efforts, they were unable to find an equaliser.

Rodgers was named Player of the Match for a standout display, but it proved to be a frustrating afternoon overall as Portland were left to reflect on what might have been.
