Portland United Reserves v Gillingham Town
Dorset Premier League
Camp & Satherley Stadium
Wednesday 15th April (7:45pm)
Portland United Reserves secured a vital three points in blustery evening conditions, overcoming Gillingham Town in a hard-fought Dorset Premier League clash.
With both sides sitting near the lower end of the table, Portland third from bottom and Gillingham just one place above, there was plenty at stake. Portland made the most of the strong wind advantage in the first half, dominating possession and pinning Gillingham deep inside their own half.
Despite Portland’s control, they were unable to find a breakthrough before the interval, striking both the crossbar and the post in a frustrating opening 45 minutes. Gillingham showed resilience to keep the scores level going into halftime.
The second half began with renewed energy from Gillingham, who looked much improved and more competitive. However, it was Portland who eventually broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. A well-worked move allowed striker Josh Tennant to calmly slot the ball home and give the hosts a deserved lead.
The game then entered a more balanced spell, but Portland doubled their advantage in the 60th minute. Josh Hanger produced a superb low strike from the edge of the box, leaving the goalkeeper with little chance and putting Portland firmly in control.
Gillingham responded with determination, applying sustained pressure and creating several chances. Their closest effort came from a well-delivered cross that resulted in a header crashing against the Portland crossbar.
Despite Gillingham’s late efforts, Portland remained solid defensively and saw out the game to secure a crucial victory.
FT: Portland United 2–0 Gillingham Town
