Reserves Beaten on DPL Return

Portland United Reserves suffered a 3–0 defeat away to Wareham Rangers in their opening Dorset Premier League fixture of the season at Purbeck Sports Centre.

Wareham, returning to the Dorset Premier League, made the brighter start and took control of the opening stages, forcing Portland to defend deep.

The hosts took the lead in the 7th minute, before doubling their advantage just eight minutes later to establish a 2–0 lead.

Portland were unable to find their rhythm during the opening exchanges, although the Reserves gradually settled into the game and began to show more of what they were capable of as the first half progressed.

The visitors produced a much-improved performance after the interval, showing greater composure in possession and beginning to put Wareham under pressure. Portland created several promising opportunities and tested the Rangers goalkeeper on a number of occasions, but could not find the finish needed to get themselves back into the game.

Managerial changes followed as Portland introduced Jude Wash, Haydn Payne, Max Fisher and Aidan Milnes during the second half, with the Reserves continuing to push forward in search of a way back.

With Portland committing players forward late on, Wareham found the decisive third goal in the 86th minute to put the result beyond doubt.

Despite the scoreline, there were encouraging signs in Portland’s second-half display, with the Reserves showing considerably more attacking intent and creating chances against a Wareham side that had started the game strongly.

There is plenty for Portland to build on as they look ahead to their next Dorset Premier League fixture, with the focus now on turning those promising spells into goals and points.
