The island is buzzing. Following a season defined by clinical home form and a late-season surge, Portland United has officially secured third place in the Velocity Wessex League Premier Division. Now, the path to promotion is clear: a high-stakes semi-final showdown against Andover New Street awaits under the lights this Wednesday, 22nd April, with kick-off at 7:45 PM.

It has been a journey defined by resilience and tactical evolution. From the winter mud to the spring sunshine, the Blues have navigated a gruelling schedule to put themselves within touching distance of the next level. The foundation for this success was laid during a powerful run through December and January.

After a dominant 4-0 win over New Milton Town in November, Portland showed they could grind out results while maintaining a fortress at the Camp & Satherley Stadium.

The turn of the year saw the Blues hit a vein of ruthless form; between January 10th and February 14th, Portland went on a five-match winning streak, outscoring opponents 15-2. This period included a scintillating 6-1 demolition of Cowes Sports and a disciplined 2-0 win over our upcoming opponents, Andover New Street, a result that may prove psychologically vital when the whistle blows on Wednesday.

Every promotion charge faces a test of character, and Portland’s came in mid-March. A frustrating 3-3 draw against Downton was followed by narrow away defeats to Baffins Milton Rovers and Hamble Club. However, the mark of a top side is how they respond to adversity.

The Blues did not blink, steadying the ship with a professional 3-0 victory over East Cowes Vics before embarking on a clinical April run. Recent performances have been a statement of intent, including a massive 6-0 away win at Christchurch and a gritty 2-1 victory over AFC Stoneham to mathematically seal this top three finish.

With a goal difference bolstered by high-scoring displays and a defence that has kept key clean sheets, the Blues enter the post-season as the division’s “form” team. Having maintained momentum through the final week of the regular season, the squad is primed for the biggest game of the year so far.

The island is expected to turn out in force to support the boys. Portland has already proven they can beat the best at home this season, and with the “12th man” of the Portland faithful behind them under the lights at the Camp & Satherley, the Blues look ready to soar.

Up the Blues!
