The Blues entertained Sherborne Town Reserves at the Camp and Satherley stadium on a calm but rainy afternoon looking to get back to winning ways in the Dorset Premier Football League on Saturday.
The Rain did not affect the Blues who started the game comfortably for the first 15 minutes, moving the ball around nicely with intent but didn’t capitalise and Sherborne who’s biggest threat was on the counter had to be watched, but Portland started to make mistakes and this was giving the away side good opportunities on the break.
However, it was against the run of play that the Blues struck first with good short passing in the middle that was worked to Matty Chambers, who whipped a lovely ball across the box for Sanchez Baker to thunder a header home for 1-0.
The lead did not last long as sloppy play from Portland resulted in a corner that was headed home by Sherborne’s Tom Beeson on 25 mins, but Portland reaction was a good one and for the rest of the half, played good football when on 40 minutes, Matty Chambers was found in space following a tidy passage of play and he cooly finished to make it 2-1.
HT 2-1
Into the second half and Portland United again started brightly but on 55 minutes, conceded again when Sherborne’s Alfie Calway equalised making it 2-2, again following a mistake by the home side, Sherborne countered and punished the Blues controlling a scrappy game for the next 15 minutes and will feel hard done by for not adding to their tally.
All the home sides problems came from their own mistakes turning over the ball inexplicably at times, but against the run of play, in the 85th minute, the Blues substitute 17-year-old David Bowmaster got the winner with a cool Low finish with the hosts finally seeing the game out to take maximum points.
