Portland United Reserves v Bournemouth Sports
Dorset Premier League
Camp & Satherley Stadium
Saturday 2nd May (3:00pm)
Portland United delivered a commanding first-half performance to secure a hard-fought victory over Bournemouth Sports in an entertaining and competitive encounter.
From the outset, Portland looked sharp and in control, dominating possession and dictating the tempo. Their pressure paid off in the 25th minute when Jamie Cleaver rose highest to meet a well-delivered cross, powering a header into the net to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Portland continued to press forward with confidence, and their attacking intent brought further rewards just before the break. In the 42nd minute, Josh Tennant doubled the advantage with a composed finish, capitalising on sustained pressure. Moments later, Mike Powell added a third with a well-taken goal, capping off an excellent spell and sending Portland into half-time with a commanding 3–0 lead.
However, the second half told a very different story. Bournemouth Sports emerged revitalised and immediately put Portland under intense pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 50th minute when a defensive mix-up resulted in an unfortunate own goal involving Preston Hepburn and the goalkeeper, reducing the deficit to 3–1.
Just two minutes later, Portland were forced to rely on their goalkeeper, who produced an outstanding save to preserve their two-goal cushion and prevent Bournemouth from gaining further momentum.
Bournemouth continued to push forward with determination, applying constant pressure and testing the Portland defence. Their efforts were rewarded late in the game with a second goal, setting up a tense finish as Portland were forced to dig deep and defend resolutely.
Despite the late surge, Portland held firm to see out the game and secure the victory. Both sides contributed to an excellent contest, with Portland’s clinical first-half display ultimately proving decisive against a spirited Bournemouth comeback.
When the final whistle eventually came, it was greeted with relief as much as celebration, a hard-earned 3–2 victory carved out in testing conditions.
And it was a result that meant everything.
In their final match of the league campaign, this win secured Portland United Reserves’ place in the Dorset Premier League for next season, confirming a 14th-place finish and capping off a season built on perseverance and progress.
It wasn’t always pretty. It wasn’t always easy. But when it mattered most, they found a way, and that’s what keeps you in the league.
