Portland United Reserves 0–2 Verwood Town
Dorset Premier League
Saturday 15th August 2026
Camp & Satherley Stadium

Portland United Reserves welcomed Verwood Town to the Camp & Satherley Stadium on Saturday afternoon for their first competitive home fixture of the season, with the players keen to mark the occasion with a positive result.

The Reserves made an encouraging start and looked the more dangerous of the two sides during the opening stages. Portland’s front line showed plenty of promise, with Josh Tennant, Sonny Cleeton and Tom Butcher all going close as the hosts looked to find an early breakthrough.

Verwood goalkeeper Josh Wallis was called upon on several occasions, making saves to keep Portland at bay, while other efforts narrowly missed the target. Portland were moving the ball well and creating opportunities, and there was plenty for the home side to be encouraged by.

As the first half progressed, the game settled into a more even contest, although Portland continued to look the more threatening going forward. Despite their promising attacking play, the Reserves were unable to turn their chances into a goal and the two sides went into the interval level at 0–0.

Portland would have been hoping to build on their first-half performance after the break, but it was Verwood who came out with the greater intensity.

The visitors immediately put the Portland defence under pressure and began to gain control of the game. Their persistence eventually paid off when they broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, putting themselves in front.

Just five minutes later, Verwood struck again to double their advantage and leave Portland with a mountain to climb at 0–2.

The Reserves struggled to reproduce the energy and attacking threat they had shown during the opening 45 minutes. Verwood grew in confidence as the game progressed and looked increasingly comfortable with their two-goal cushion.

Portland continued to work hard and tried to find a way back into the contest, but the visitors defended their advantage well and ultimately saw the game out to claim all three points.

Although the result was disappointing, particularly after such an encouraging opening half, there were positives for the Reserves to take from their first competitive home outing.

Portland showed in the first half that they are capable of creating chances and causing problems for opposition defences. The challenge now will be to maintain that level of performance and intensity for the full 90 minutes.

The Reserves will take the lessons from this game and look to bounce back strongly in their next fixture hoe to Dorchester Sports on Wednesday 19th August (7:45pm).
