Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance Senior Trophy
Saturday 31st October 2026, 2:00pm
Camp & Satherley Stadium.
Callum Norman grabbed the headlines with a superb hat-trick as Portland United Reserves produced an impressive second-half performance to overcome Verwood Town 5–2 and secure an excellent Trophy victory.
But it was far from plain sailing for Portland, who had to show plenty of character after finding themselves under early pressure from a lively Verwood side.
The visitors made the brighter start, dominating the opening ten minutes and keeping Portland penned back in their own half. However, as the home side gradually settled, the contest developed into an entertaining, end-to-end affair, with both teams creating opportunities.
Verwood struck first in the 22nd minute, finishing off a well-worked move to take the lead. Their advantage, though, was short-lived.
Portland responded with a determined attack as Tom Butcher burst through the Verwood defence before being brought down inside the penalty area. The referee pointed straight to the spot, and Butcher confidently stepped up to convert, bringing Portland level at 1–1.
Despite further efforts from both sides, neither could find another breakthrough before half-time, leaving everything to play for.
Whatever was said in the Portland dressing room at the interval certainly had the desired effect, as the Reserves returned with renewed energy and began to take control of the game.
It took just eight minutes for their improved performance to pay dividends. On 53 minutes, Tom Butcher rattled the crossbar with an effort that looked destined for the net, but Callam Norman was perfectly placed to pounce on the rebound and fire Portland into a 2–1 lead.
Seven minutes later, Butcher was celebrating again. The striker found the net on the 60th minute to extend Portland’s advantage to 3–1 and put the home side firmly in the driving seat.
Portland was now playing with real confidence, and Norman struck again in the 70th minute, grabbing his second of the afternoon to make it 4–1.
Verwood refused to surrender and continued to battle, pulling a goal back in the 80th minute to reduce the deficit to 4–2 and give themselves a glimmer of hope.
But any thoughts of a dramatic comeback were quickly extinguished. On 83 minutes, Norman completed his hat-trick with his third goal of the afternoon, sealing a memorable personal performance and putting the finishing touch to a convincing 5–2 Portland victory.
There was little doubt about the afternoon’s standout performer. Norman’s three goals earned him the Man of the Match accolade, capping an excellent display and marking his first hat-trick of the season.
Butcher was equally influential, winning and converting the penalty, striking the crossbar in the build-up to Norman’s first goal and adding a second-half strike of his own to finish with two goals.
It was an excellent all-round team performance from Portland, who showed resilience after going behind and then demonstrated their attacking quality after the interval.
Verwood deserve credit for their spirited performance, particularly in the opening stages, but Portland’s second-half superiority ultimately proved decisive.
Five goals, a superb hat-trick and a memorable Trophy victory. A thoroughly deserved result for Portland United Reserves, with Norman and Butcher leading the charge and the whole squad having plenty to be proud of.
